![]() The first sacred prayer and study for Jews is the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem. I understand that this area is the second most popular Jewish prayer and religious study site. This site is sacred because it is the holy burial site of Abraham, Sarah and their sons and wives. Tombs of the Patriarchs and the Cave of Machpelah are considered sacred pray sites. The men and women don’t study together, each study in their own area separated by a screen. Behind the screens are men and women studying the Torah. Inside there is a hallway that leads to a Jewish study area. Casually they spoke English and seemed pretty chilled-out, unlike the earlier soldiers I saw on the #24 bus. We chatted with the soldiers for a while. Soldiers at the Tombs of the Patriarchs and the Cave of Machpelah This side of the Tombs of the Patriarchs and the Cave of Machpelah was secured by Israeli soldiers w hile Palestinian guards secured the Muslim entrance. While the Muslim side is inside the mosque on this side, there isn’t a synagogue. On the other hand, the Jewish side doesn’t allow visitors near the Tombs without passing through security first. But the Jewish security doesn’t have a crushing enclosed feeling. Unlike the Muslim side, the security is outside of the sanctuary. The first thing I noticed is the security of the site. The Jewish guarded entrance is different from the Muslim entrance. Palestine is where Abraham intended to bury the three couples. She is now buried in the Tomb of Rachel in Israel which is on the other side of the Wall. The Cave of Machpelah is the actual burial place for the three couples. Almost every important Jew who came to the Land of Israel over the generations tried to visit and pray here. Today the cave complex is divided between a Muslim area and a Jewish area. For 700 years since the days of the Mameluke Sultan Baibars, Jews were forbidden to enter the Cave of the Patriarchs. But since the Six-Day War (1967) the Jews have returned to visit the site. Since then Christians and Muslims have once taken over the compound. Throughout the ages, the Tomb of the Patriarchs was the second most important Jewish pilgrimage site. ![]() The structure we see today was built by King Herod. There is a Midrash that says that the grave of Adam and Eve is also there. ![]() Three couples are buried in the cave, Avraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebecca and Jacob and Leah. This was the first Jewish real estate deal in the land of Canaan. The cave, which is located beneath the building that is seen today, was purchased by Avraham Avinu in order to bury his wife Sarah there.
